Open Beta Walkthrough
Step-by-step guide through the Mortal Shell 2 open beta, including playable Shells, bosses, routes, and starter tips.
The Mortal Shell 2 Open Beta covered roughly the first 2 to 3 hours of the game—about 10% of the full experience. This walkthrough covers the prologue, the hub area, the main route to Marrow Keep, and the core systems you need to survive.
1. Prologue & First Shell
You begin as the Harbinger in a snowy, ritual-filled opening. The tutorial teaches movement, light/heavy attacks, and the new Resolve system. Stamina has been removed, so combat is paced by Resolve and shell abilities instead of a green bar.
- Pick up Harros the Vassal as your temporary tutorial Shell.
- Learn to Harden into stone—Harros can petrify enemies to drain their posture.
- Defeat the first boss to exit the prologue and reach the open-world hub.
2. Dark Morrow Hub
Dark Morrow is your central safe zone. Here you meet vendors, upgrade gear, and speak to Zhirelle, the shellkeeper, who manages Shell Bonding.
- Shell Bonding: Spend Glimpses to raise a Shell's Bond Level, unlocking skill tiers and Shell Memories.
- Skill Tree: Each Shell has 4 tiers of passive buffs; Shell Points are earned by leveling your character.
- Level cap in the beta is 15, granting 11 Shell Points (expandable to 22 through bonding).
3. Unlocking Thiel the Acolyte
The second playable Shell in the beta is Thiel the Acolyte, a fast assassin. Find his remains in the early region, then return to Zhirelle to bond with him.
- Thiel's active skill enters a short stealth state for a powerful strike.
- He is ideal for hit-and-run play and for learning the new Resolve loop.
- Bonding with Thiel unlocks 2 Shell Memories in the beta.
4. Beacons, Dungeons & Route to Marrow Keep
The beta map is compact but interconnected. Your main goal is to cleanse beacons, explore optional dungeons, and push toward Marrow Keep.
- Leave Dark Morrow and cleanse the first beacon to unlock fast travel.
- Enter nearby dungeons for upgrade materials and optional mini-bosses.
- Watch for the Arbiter of Flesh feign attack—he delays a swipe to bait parries.
- Reach Magdelena, the Lady of the Woods, the beta's major boss gate.
5. Combat & Build Tips
- Resolve fuels shell skills, sidearm fire, special attacks, and weapon infusions. Manage it like a mana bar.
- Seals: Untarnished (standard parry), Infinite (tighter window, more posture damage), Vatra's (Harden), Slayer (sidearm break + healing riposte).
- Tarstones: Equip Support, Combat, Infusion, and Ability Tarstones to customize your build. They level up with use.
- Refund skill points at any time—experiment freely with different Shell builds.
Beta Rewards
Completing the Open Beta unlocked rewards that carried over to the full game: the Flayed Harbinger cosmetic and the option to skip the Prologue after passing Marrow Keep. Nearly all other progression was reset at launch.
